I am a first year homeschooling mother and today I have ran into another first on this homeschooling journey. I am sick. I have lost my voice and cannot speak above a raspy whisper. What to do when calling a substitute teacher is not an option? Well, like most home educating mothers these day.. off to the internet I went. I put together a fun science lesson for my little girl about plants. These activities cover the parts of a plant, how a plant makes its food, and the stages of plant growth. These activities also will strengthen reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. She learned all of this while having a good time and I didn’t have to talk that much.
We watched, The Magic School Bus Gets Planted on Netflix. If you do not have Netflix, here is a link to the full episode on YouTube:
Also, here is a link to a worksheet that older children can complete while watching the Magic School Bus episode. My daughter wasn’t able to answer all of them but she got a lot of them.
Then I printed these worksheets out for her to complete:

She then played this online video game on how to make a plant grow. This game may be a little too difficult to play for a preschooler. (also, there is a quiz button at the end of the game with age appropriate questions) :
I don’t know if your child is like mine when it comes to making books, but my daughter is crazy about making booklets; she loves them! Here is a bean booklet from Enchanted Learning that is perfect for this lesson. The only down side to this is that you must pay for a membership to Enchanted Learning to access it. So, to give you an idea of what the booklet is like I used the handy snipping tool on my computer to make pictures of the book and save it to my computer so that I could show you (I first had to right click on the snipped image and press copy and then paste it to word so that I could edit the picture to make it fit on here…If you are a home educating mom who doesn’t know about the snipping tool.. you should get to know it! the snipping tool on my computer is my best friend!)

We also used this opportunity to pull weeds during outside time so that we could look at the roots. 🙂
Alright! There ya go. I hope your kiddos have as much fun as mine did doing this..and psssst, mom – why don’t you go make yourself a cup of coffee?
